About the event
Join us on Saturday 4th October for the opening of
"Mwaiseni Mukwai" a solo exhibition by Maingaila Muvundika curated by Sana Ginwalla.
In "Mwaiseni Mukwai", Muvundika explores the family album as a site where a loose curation of collective memory stretches beyond generations. Whether tattered, fragmented or intact, the photographs act as objects of memory, activated by the many stories that surround the moment captured.
Grappling with the fraught relationship many Black Zambians have with the camera - even in present times
Muvundika asks: how does the photograph become a tool of collective preservation and documentation? In a society where a public image must be constructed, what is censored and what is shared?
Amidst this, notions of loss, erasure, self-determined representation are evoked across photographs, collages and linocut prints. The passage of time is composed with texture of intentional damage and materialities of the family photograph.
