About the event
"Margins of Memory" is a reflection on the Zambia Belonging counter-archive and the photographs that fall into obscurity in national memory. How do we place value on photographs outside of state archives? What capacity do they have to make us critically address the margins of memory? Can photographs bring us closer to our sense of identity and belonging?
The genesis of the Zambia Belonging collection is the found photographs from Fine Art Studios, an establishment founded in the 1950s which catered to black clientele.
Never-before-seen unclaimed and damaged originals from Fine Art Studios are the main fixture of this exhibition, showcasing a wide array of people with their own unique ties to Zambian identity from politicians, musicians, professionals and families.
The exhibition also shows how a range of materialities - from silk screen, block prints, collages and woodcuts - were introduced into the collection through various interventions with international institutions…
