About the event

Everyday Lusaka is proud to present Ichibukisho, a new exhibition by Zambian-German artist Clarita Maria Phiri-Beierdörffer.

Ichibukisho, meaning the act of remembering in Icibemba, is a body of work that interrogates how memories are created and sustained.

Oftentimes, when one is uprooted from home, there are slippages that occur in memory and in language. In trying to remember how one could describe the act of remembering, Clarita's definition of Ichibukisho describes a disconnect between home, memory and belonging.

Historically, memory was preserved through oral tradition - a collective process shaped by voices, gestures, and behaviours. The photograph, while preserving moments, captures only one layer of remembering. At what point does memory become a reflection of the object, rather than the event itself?

Clarita explores this question, considering remembering as both an individual and communal act. She uses conversation and visual material to surface what sits in the subconscious, revealing memory…
